Formats
Video downloads as MP4 and audio as M4A, which play everywhere and need nothing else. For other formats, Downbit converts the file once it has downloaded.
Choosing a format
For one download, choose from Save as in its preview. For all of them, set Format under Video and under Audio in Settings → Formats.
| Formats | |
|---|---|
| Video | MP4, MKV, MOV, WebM |
| Audio | M4A, MP3, Opus, FLAC, WAV |
Converting
Converting is done by FFmpeg. If your computer has none, Downbit downloads it the first time a format needs it, checks it, and keeps it for next time; Settings → Formats → Conversion shows which one it uses. Streams the new format can hold are copied as they are, so converting is quick.
Quality and codecs
Settings → Formats → Quality sets the highest quality a download picks. Downbit prefers H.264 and AAC, which play everywhere; turn off Prefer H.264 and AAC for the highest resolution a site offers, which may come as VP9 or AV1.
Subtitles
Turn on Settings → Formats → Subtitles and give the languages, as en,de, or all. They go inside the video, to choose from as it plays; turn off Subtitles inside videos to save them beside it instead.
Sponsors
In YouTube videos, the parts SponsorBlock's viewers mark — ad reads, intros, reminders to subscribe — can be kept, marked as chapters, or removed, in Settings → Formats → Sponsors in YouTube videos.
Titles and artwork
Files are tagged with their title, artist, date, link, chapters and artwork, which Music, TV, QuickTime and Finder show. On a Mac, Get Info in Finder also shows the page each file came from.
